Welcome to our Willow Class page. This is where we will share our news and topics for this year!

Term 5:

Subject

 

Sentence explaining curriculum

English

In English we will be looking closely at the features of stories. The main focus this term will be on ‘Into the Forest’. We will be consolidating our understanding of the use of capital letters, full stops and finger spaces throughout the term. In addition to this, we will be looking at using similes, alliteration, expanded noun phrases, adverbs and commas in lists in our writing.

Maths

In maths we will be looking closely at time. We will look at comparing and sequencing intervals of time. Then we will tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times. By the end of the term we will aim to know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day.

Science

We are looking at living things and how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.

RE

We will be looking at a range of religions and the differences and similarities between them.

Art and Design

We will be looking at using different materials to create a variety of natural designs.

Computing

We will begin by recapping e-safety and the develop our knowledge and understanding of using PowerPoint.

PE

We will be looking into how to participate in different games.

Phonics (EY and KS1)

We will be recapping our Phase 5 knowledge and keep developing our grammar knowledge through the Phase 6 scheme.

Term 4:

Subject

 

Sentence explaining curriculum

English

In English we will be looking closely at the features of explanation texts. The main focus this term will be on ‘Until I met Dudley’. We will be looking into how to use headings and sub-headings when writing explanation texts.

Maths

In maths we will be focusing on fractions and recognising, finding, naming and writing the fractions , and and finding a length, shape, set of objects or quantity of these fractions. We will also start to write simple fraction sentences, for example: ½ of 6=3. We will then start to recognise non-unit fractions such as ¾ and start to recognise equivalent fractions such as 2/4 and ½.

Science

In science we are looking at plants, including trees. We will be exploring the differences between deciduous and evergreen tree and naming and identifying common and wild flowering plants. We will then be looking at naming the different parts of flowering plants and their functions. We will also be investigating the life cycle of plants, and what they need to grow and stay healthy by planting their own broad bean plant and observing its growth.

Humanities

In History we will be looking into the life of pirates. We will learn all about who pirates are. We will also research famous pirates and create PowerPoint presentations on what we find to present to the class.

RE

We will be looking at answering ‘ultimate questions’.

Art and Design

We will be looking at different ways to create a pirate ship and creating pirate themed art work using a range of materials.

Computing

In computing the children are looking at coding by using the programme Scratch. Through using Scratch, they will understand what an algorithm is, create and debug simple programs and use their logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs. Scratch will allow the children to create their own games and provide insights into coding. The children will then be looking at how to stay safe when using the internet through exploring how to keep personal information private and who to contact about their internet related concerns.

PE

We will be looking at a combination of dancing and gymnastics.

Phonics (EY and KS1)

After completing the phase 6 scheme we are now going to look at SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). We will start by looking at word classes.

Term 3:

Subject

 

Sentence explaining curriculum

English

In English we will be looking closely at the features of stories. The main focus this term will be on ‘Flotsam’. We will be consolidating our understanding of the use of capital letters, full stops and finger spaces throughout the term. In addition to this, we will be looking at using similes, alliteration, expanded noun phrases and commas in lists in our writing.

Maths

In maths we will be looking closely at division and multiplication. We will work on recalling and using multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers.

Science

We are looking at living things and their habitats. We will explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive. Then we will move onto investigating whether most living things live in habitats that they are suited to and can talk about how they are suited to them.

Humanities

In Geography we will be using atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as continents and oceans.

RE

We will be looking at a range of religions, with a heavy focus on Judaism.

Art and Design

We will be looking at using different materials to create a variety of landscapes.

Computing

We will begin by recapping e-safety and the develop our knowledge and understanding of coding.

Music

Learning that we can notate music – how to read and write sound.

Learning how to play percussion instruments properly.

Learning to be able to select appropriate instruments for differing rhythms

Being able to sing more thoughtfully and start to sing in rounds.

Learning to be able to maintain a rhythm against others.

PE

We will be looking into how to dance like different animals.

Term 2:

English

We will be looking at a range of recount texts. The focus will be on Little Red Riding Hood. The children will be looking into detail at the perspectives of Little Red Riding Hood, Granny, the lumberjack and the wolf. The children will be working towards writing their own recounts.

Maths

In maths we will be looking closely at the value of money. We will develop our skills in counting money, selecting the correct coins to make a certain total, making the same amount using different coins, finding the difference between two amounts and finding change.

Science

In Science we will be focusing on living things and their habitats.

RE

In RE the children are looking at why people celebrate birthdays.

Art and Design

In Art we are looking at using different art materials and practising their control when drawing and painting.

Computing

We will begin by recapping e-safety and the develop our computing skills by planning, typing and printing our stories.

Music

Learning that we can notate music – how to read and write sound. Learning how to play percussion instruments properly. Learning to be able to select appropriate instruments for differing rhythms. Being able to sing more thoughtfully and start to sing in rounds. Learning to be able to maintain a rhythm against others.

PE

In PE we are going to be completing a unit on dancing.

Sentence explaining curriculum

English

We will be reading ‘Chalk’ by Bill Tomson and using this as a stimulus to help us to develop our writing skills and vocabulary bank.

Maths

In maths we will be looking closely at numbers to 100. As well as working on their ability to recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones). We will then use this knowledge of place value and number facts to solve problems. Then at the end of the term we will be working on solving problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.

Science

In Science we will be focusing on materials and their properties. We will be carrying out a variety of experiments and investigations using a variety of materials.

Humanities

In History we are concentrating on the Victorians, with a heavy focus on Florence Nightingale. The children will be looking at the similarities and differences by comparing their lives with those who experienced a Victorian childhood.

RE

In RE the children will be looking at answering the following questions: ‘Who is Jesus?’ and ‘A great teacher or a great leader?’

Art and Design

In Art the children are going to be looking closely at the work of Kandinsky.

Computing

We will begin by recapping e-safety and then creating some informative PowerPoints on our Art, History and Science topics.

Music

Learning that we can notate music – how to read and write sound. Learning how to play percussion instruments properly. Learning to be able to select appropriate instruments for differing rhythms. Being able to sing more thoughtfully and start to sing in rounds. Learning to be able to maintain a rhythm against others.

PE

In PE we are looking at how to play games and learning the different rules that need to be followed whilst playing them.
